Back to the Farm!

I had an amazing childhood growing up on my families farm! So many lessons and memories to look back on. My favorite times were riding my horses. It seems so long ago, but the visions are quite clear to this day. I still find myself doing things "old school" the way I learned from my grandparents. Some things are hard to change! I knew when I left the farm to start my life, I would someday find my way back. It was my dream!

Way back when, lol, I went to college for a degree in Information Science and Technology. After graduating with my bachelor degree, I found a great job at an environmental company in the Software Development department. Not long after starting this new endeavor, I volunteered to go out in the field for a major accident which our company was hired to test and analyze damage due to this accident. I worked as an Engineer Scientist while working in the field. It was an amazing experience to say the least. Worked with amazing colleagues willing to share their knowledge and soaked it all up like a sponge! After this particular project was over, I continued to do field work for the company, but had an opportunity to work with a Dr. who was creating forms of energy from old tires. Wow! So much to learn there!! It was another experience learning from experts and creating the data spreadsheets to provide the necessary information for all the tests that were being done.

I forgot to tell you, days before I left for my first field project, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis... I was floored to say the least! But the job kept me busy from dwelling on this news, which is what I'm sure got me through the initial shock. I'll come back to this at a later time!

Fast forward a few years, I had the opportunity to work at a non-profit organization that provides services to children with Autism. What a great experience! I gained a great appreciation to all the folks that provide these services day in and day out to these kiddos! They have my utmost respect. These folks do not get enough credit for the services they provide to the kiddos and their families!

Although my previous jobs gave so much, I wasn't happy. I wanted to go back to my roots, my passion; animals, farming, outdoor life.

Home at last!!! After years of living away from the farm, I suddenly had the opportunity to finally come home. The circumstances, however, were not as I had planned them to be. My mom was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Brain Cancer. This knocked the wind right out of me, shook me to the core, and threw me to the ground... I knew I had to be home again. We were told we probably only have 6 months with her, but she fought it and lived for 2 1/2 years! She was an amazing woman and was determined to beat this awful disease. Unfortunately, this was not meant to be. When asked for how I coped, I say find the humor where you can. It helps to get you through the rough times during the disease progression; and helps you afterward with the memories of the time frame.

So, I moved back to the farm just weeks before my mom passed away. Heartbreaking to say the least. She never had the opportunity to enjoy me being back home again. Even if it was just on the other side of the farm.

This was highlights of how I got back to my family farm. Of course there is a lot left out as I didn't want to bore you with those details!

Back home. Now what???

Let's go back a few years... Prior to moving back to the farm, I had a small plot of land in the country to work with. So I got chickens! I decided I wanted goats to help clear the brush and tons of poison ivy from the property. After doing some research, I wanted to get a breed that no one locally had, and one that was on the Conservancy List. So.. I decided on Myotonic aka "Fainting" Goats! This breed fit my list to the T! A smaller goat that aren't escape artists!!! Friendly, sociable, easy keepers. How could I go wrong, perfect for me. (Status is now recovering, btw). And off I go!!!

Have I mentioned that once I decide to do something, I'm all in! I'm very determined that way, I get that from my mom!

Ok, goats. What do I need??? More research, because now I decided that I want to breed these wonderful goats! But more on this next time.

This was just a quick background. This Blog is going to be based on anything farming related, pets, livestock, Goat Milk Soap and Cheese, health, gardening, fauna, outdoor living, and so much more! Can't wait to share my experiences with you!!!
